Hiking around Tamsweg

Volunteering in a mountainous area has numerous advantages, especially for those who enjoy outdoor activities like hiking. Around Tamsweg, there are countless stunning locations waiting to be explored, and recently, I had the opportunity to visit one of these remarkable spots.

Exploring Wetlands with the ALFAwetlands Project

As a volunteer for the European Wilderness Society (EWS), I get an introduction to various EWS projects, one of them is ALFAwetlands. My interest in wetlands naturally drew me to explore a wetland area situated atop a nearby mountain.

The hike to the wetland was quite challenging, but the beauty of the surroundings made it worthwhile. Along the path, we encountered a diverse array of mushrooms and herbs, which our knowledgeable guide identified and explained in fascinating detail. We also came across historic boundary stones that once marked the limits of the Kaiser’s property in the forest.

During our journey through the forest, we stumbled upon the remnants of an old wooden hut. This building was previously used by shepherds to tend to their livestock, although now only ruins remain as a testament to its past.

The Environmental Importance of Wetlands in a Changing Climate

Reaching the top of the mountain, we finally arrived at the wetland. Unfortunately, the effects of unusually hot summers were evident; the wetland was noticeably drying up. This alarming trend highlights a significant environmental concern, as wetlands play a crucial role in the ecosystem. They act as carbon sinks, support a variety of species, and provide cool, refreshing areas during the summer heat.

The drying of wetlands due to high temperatures is a pressing issue. If this trend continues, it could lead to the complete desiccation of these vital habitats, which would have detrimental effects on the environment. Wetlands are essential not only for their ecological benefits but also for their ability to mitigate the impacts of climate change.

Overall, volunteering with the EWS has been rewarding experience. It has provided me with the chance to contribute to important environmental activities while also enjoying the natural beauty and hiking opportunities in the Tamsweg area.
