European Wilderness Volunteer DiaryThe Diary of the European Wilderness Society Volunteers

One Year in Austria: A Volunteering Journey to Remember

It’s hard to believe that 12 months have flown by! My time living in Austria has come to an end, which also means the conclusion of my volunteering experience. I’m so grateful for the opportunity to be part of it—meeting incredible people, traveling, and learning so much along the way.

Volunteering with the European Wilderness Society gave me the chance to work on nature conservation and environmental protection projects—topics that are more relevant than ever as climate change impacts us all. My role was dynamic and tailored to my skills, from writing publications about nature, wilderness, and wildlife to gaining hands-on experience in project management. I also contributed to communication efforts, managed digital content, and even helped with podcast production, all while supporting the organization’s mission.

One of the best parts? Being part of an international team! Working alongside people from different backgrounds meant sharing stories, exchanging cultures, and creating unforgettable memories. We traveled together, went on hikes, cooked our national dishes, and simply enjoyed each other’s company.

Living in Austria itself was an adventure. I immersed myself in local traditions, tried authentic Austrian food, and explored the country’s rich history and culture. Throughout the year, I visited different regions, made wonderful friends, and, of course, fell in love with Vienna’s timeless beauty —no matter how many times I visited, the city always felt magical. And being surrounded by the majestic Alps? Pure motivation to get out and hike! The breathtaking scenery made every outdoor adventure unforgettable.

This experience has been truly fascinating. Supporting the European Wilderness Society and contributing to its projects has been a rewarding chapter in my life. The warmth of the local community, my colleagues, and fellow volunteers made this year even more special. While my volunteering journey in Austria may have ended, new opportunities are always just around the corner. Excited to see where the next adventure takes me, bringing along everything I’ve learned from this incredible year!
