European Wilderness Volunteer DiaryThe Diary of the European Wilderness Society Volunteers

Start of my volunteering in Tamsweg, Austria

Hello. I am Lika, a new volunteer from Georgia. I will be volunteering for the European Wilderness Society for 12 months.

The reason I chose this particular project is that I wanted to gain international experience and be closer to nature. I saw this volunteering opportunity on the internet and immediately applied. The European Wilderness Society contacted me, we had an interview, I was selected, and then I started preparing for the trip.

Travelling to Tamsweg

After completing all the paperwork and official procedures for traveling, I finally arrived in Tamsweg.

This is my first time in Austria, so planning took some time. The staff at the European Wilderness Society has been very helpful, which made my journey easier.

First, my plane landed in Vienna. I stayed there for one night, and the next day, I took the train to Salzburg. The City of Mozart did not disappoint.

After that, I traveled by bus to Tamsweg. The scenery along the way was breathtaking. With the Alps, green fields, and little houses, this place has everything to leave you speechless.

I spent a few days navigating around the town. Tamsweg is a small place, but it has everything you might need.

First hiking experience in Tamsweg

Even though it’s spring on the calendar, we had some cold days in March. But April is warmer, and I couldn’t resist going hiking. My first destination was the church, which I look at every day from our office. Surrounded by forest, the 15th-century church is a popular tourist attraction in Tamsweg, inviting visitors to experience its timeless beauty.

Since it’s an Alpine region, there are mountains everywhere, so we went for hiking.

Our hiking destination was a lake in the Alps! If you want to see beautiful mountains, rivers, waterfalls, and Wirpidschsee lake up in the Alps, this destination is for you. The path is tiring if you are untrained like me, but it is totally worth it. The lake was still covered with ice, but if you are as brave and adventurous as my awesome flat mate Maureen, you can try swimming in an icy lake. I just had a delicious picnic next to it.

This is just the beginning of my journey. There is so much to do, see, and experience, and I am looking forward to what next month’s offer.
