My first month in Tamsweg was a serene and memorable experience. November, often considered an in-between month, unfolded with a quiet charm that felt refreshing. It is late autumn, and the festive energy of December has yet to arrive, leaving the streets tranquil and unhurried. This calmness seemed to cover the town, offering a peaceful rhythm that invited reflection and exploration.
Forest Walks and Mountain Rivers
I spent a lot of my time wandering through the nearby forests, which are truly enchanting. The trees, tall and majestic, stand as silent witnesses to the changing seasons. When the first light snowfall arrived, the forest transformed into a magical landscape. The thin layer of snow revealed animal tracks that told stories of the wildlife that inhabits the area. Recognizing these tracks, from deer to foxes, added an extra layer of fascination to my walks. Each step through the woods felt like discovering a hidden world.
Another highlight of my time here was the Mountain River. Its crystal-clear waters, flowing steadily through the valley, seemed untouched by time. The river’s beauty lies in its purity, reflecting the surrounding mountains and forests in its surface. Whether glistening in the soft November sunlight or shimmering on frosty mornings, it was a constant source of tranquillity and inspiration.

The weather during November was unexpectedly pleasant, with not a single drop of rain. Instead, mornings greeted me with a light frost that added a special charm to my walks to the European Wilderness Society ́s office. There’s something about the way the frost glitters under the first rays of sunlight that transforms even the simplest routes into something extraordinary. Each day felt like an opportunity to immerse myself in the quiet beauty of the season.
Tamsweg itself, nestled on the southern slope of the Schladminger Tauern mountain range within the Central Eastern Alps, is a town of understated beauty. Its location in the valley of the upper Mur River provides breathtaking views and easy access to nature. Even in this seemingly quiet month, the town’s charm shines through in its harmonious connection with the surrounding landscapes. November in Tamsweg, though understated, proved to be a time of discovery and peace, leaving me eager to experience the seasonal transformations that lie ahead.
